چکیده

We have studied the third order optical nonlinearities of Ge-As-Se-based glasses. The glasses have high melting and glass transition temperatures that offer the potential for integration with traditional compound oxide glasses into highly nonlinear, high-index-contrast fibers. We used z-scan and femtosecond pump-probe techniques to measure the nonlinear refractive index and two-photon absorption coefficient of the glasses at telecommunication wavelengths. Nonlinearities as high as ,9003 that of silica were measured at 1540 nm in Ge35As15Se50 with a glass transition temperature of 380 °C. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.1805182]

Microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties of chalcogenide glasses and glass-ceramics based on Se-As-Ge system nucleated by Sn

In particular, chalcogenide glasses and glass-ceramics are new materials that exhibit good transparency in infrared region (0.8-12µm). We can overcome the main weakness of these glasses by improving the hardness through controlling crystallization. In this paper, we report results of a study on chalcogenide glasses in the ternary system of As-Se-Ge with nominal composition of Snx (Se...

Fabrication and Structural Characterization of Se-Ge Chalcogenide Glasses by Means of Melt Quenching Technique

The structural and optical characterization of Se-Ge alloys during melt quenching technique was the goal of this study. In this regards, five different samples of Se100-xGex (x= 10, 20, 30, 40, 50) were prepared by conventional melt quenching in quartz ampoule. The produced samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calori...

Compositional dependence of the nonlinear refractive index of new germanium-based chalcogenide glasses

In this paper, we report results of n2 measurements of new chalcogenide glasses in the Ge–Sb–S–Se system using a modified Z-Scan technique. Measurements were made with picosecond pulses emitted by a 10Hz Q-switched mode-locked Nd-YAG laser at 1064nm under conditions suitable to characterize ultrafast nonlinearities. The nonlinear index increases up to 500 times the n2 of fused silica with an in...

Studies of third-order nonlinearities in materials and devices for ultrafast lasers

Recent developments in telecommunications, frequency metrology, and medical imaging have motivated research in ultrafast optics. Demand exists for broadband components and sources as well as highly nonlinear fibers and materials. For this thesis, several different devices have been developed for such applications. Broadband saturable absorbers based on III/V and Si materials systems were develo...

Short range order in Ge - As - Se glasses

The structure of GexAs10Se90-x (x=10, 17.5, 22.5, 27.5, 30, 35) glasses as well as some other compositions extensively used in infrared optics, e.g. GASIR® (Ge22As20Se58) and AMTIR-1 (Ge33As12Se55) has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Ge, As and Se K-edges. Structural models have been obtained by fitting simult...
